Abstract

This aims of this research is to explain of women’s role behind the existence of classical masks that are spreading worldwide. This study is a descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach conducted in the Bobung cultural tourism village, Gunung Kidul of Yogyakarta. The data were taken from informants, places & events, and documents or archives. Data were collected by in-depth interview techniques, participatory observation, and analysis of documents or archives. The validity of the data was tested by source triangulation and informant review techniques. Data analysis used flow model of analysis techniques with the procedures of reduction, display, and verification. The results show that women hold a significant role behind the existence of classical mask and mask creations which are widely recognized by people around the world. The role is shown from their work in creating the masks and mask dance performances. Women’s role is more on things that are soft and complicated which require a high level of precision, patience, perseverance, tenacity, and sense.
