Abstract

Using historical approach, this research investigates the modernization of pesantren (Islamic boarding school) executed by K.H. Imam Zarkasyi who was one of the pioneers of modernization of pesantren in Indonesia. He has introduced a new pesantren education system called Kulliyyatul Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyyah (a six-year secondary level of education - equal to junior high school and senior high school). The modernization system includes the curriculum that covers both traditional Islamic educational andthe secular educational materials.
